Thank you very much for inviting me to this online symposium. I am a social psychologist by training but I’ve been doing research at the intersection of nutrition and mental health recently and I’m happy to present to you today my research on the role of kiwifruit intake as a potential mood enhancer and the implications of my research for health and well-being given the Covid-19 crisis.

By way of background, there is fairly consistent evidence that a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables is better for your mood including things like less depression, better mental health and well-being. For example, a Mediterranean diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, nuts and olive oil, fish is linked to lower levels of depression. Healthy more traditional Japanese diet rich in vegetables, fruits and soy has been associated with lower depression and conversely a Western diet, the typical fast food, junk food and refined carbohydrates and lots of soda is linked to higher depression and lower well-being.

However, the contribution to mood from specific foods like kiwifruit or specific nutrients like Vitamin C is less well understood. That’s changing with the research that I’m going to present to you today.
