More than a single lens per eye was required for a clinical reason for five subjects when fitted with the XXX lens. Here, a power change for one lens only was needed for four subjects and for both lenses for a fifth subject. For the YYY lens, three subjects required a further lens. In two instances, a power change was required for one lens only and on one occasion, both lenses were changed.

At both dispensing and follow-up, all lens fits were described as at least ‘acceptable’. Between 26-29% of fits were considered to be ‘optimum’ for the four lens type/visit combinations. Overall, the number of optimum fits was not significantly different for the two lens types at either dispensing (t = 0.3, p = 0.78) or follow-up (t = 0.4, p = 0.71).

There were no differences between the two lens types for the appearance of the lens surface at the dispensing visit deposition (t = 1.0, p = 0.32) or wettability (t = 0.8, p = 0.42). More post-lens debris was reported with the YYY lens (17% of grades above Grade 0) compared to that with the XXX Lens (7%) (t = 2.1, p = 0.04).

At the follow-up visits, no difference was established between the lenses for deposition (t= 1.9, p = 0.06) and wettability (t = 1.4, p = 0.16). However, more post-lens debris was again reported for the YYY lens (t = 2.2, p = 0.03). In all, three of the XXX lenses across the two visits (2.1%) were recorded with more than Grade 0 deposition (all classed as ‘spots’) compared with 10 YYY lenses (7.2%), with eight ‘spots’ and two ‘films’.
